A British UFO researcher claims to have solved the mystery of the "Calvine UFO," a case that has puzzled enthusiasts for over three decades. On August 4, 1990, two hikers in Calvine, Scotland, snapped six extraordinary photos of a diamond-shaped object in the sky, apparently pursued by one or two Harrier jets. These photos were handed over to the Scottish Daily Record, which in turn sent them to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for verification. However, the story was never published, and the images and negatives disappeared.
The event only became widely known in 1996 when Nick Pope, a former MOD official, mentioned it in his book "Open Skies, Closed Minds." Pope recalled having an enlarged copy of the photo in his MOD office, which was later removed by his superiors. In August 2022, a retired RAF press officer released what was purported to be one of the original photos, though the identity of the photographer, named Kevin Russell, remains unverified.
Recent investigations by researcher and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee, who accessed retired CID officer John Hanson's extensive UFO archive, suggest a pattern of diamond-shaped UFO sightings around UK military bases since the 1970s. One notable sighting in April 1978 described a similar object being chased by RAF jets. Another sighting by police officer Brett Lyne in 1979 detailed a massive, silent diamond-shaped craft with colorful lights on its underside.
These sightings raise questions about the nature of the Calvine UFO. Lee speculates that the craft could be a secret military technology, possibly related to the rumored Aurora spy plane. This theory is supported by the timing of the sighting, just two days after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, hinting at a possible military connection. Additionally, some believe there may be a link to the famous Rendelsham UFO incident of 1980, where US military officers witnessed strange events near RAF Bentwaters.
Despite these intriguing connections, the MOD maintains that no UFO sighting in over 50 years has indicated any military threat to the UK. The identities of the Calvine hikers remain confidential, protected by MOD privacy concerns until 2076.
